Fire displaces 29 at Hawthorne South Apartments - The Daily News Journal

MURFREESBORO – A fire today at the Hawthorne South Apartments on Indian Park Drive displaced 29 residents, according to a release from the Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department.


No injuries to residents were reported from the fire, officials said, but at least one pet, a black Laborador Retriever, died in the fire.


MFRD units responded to a fire around 5:45 p.m., the release stated The initial call was for fire on the balcony area.


Upon arrival, units discovered heavy smoke and flames shooting through the roof of Apartment 2106, officials said, but no one was in the unit. Crews immediately cleared the building of all residents.


Crews got the fire knocked down as quickly as possible and remained on scene conducting salvage and overhaul, officials said.


Commander Tim Swann said at least three units received heavy fire, smoke or water damage, according to the release. At least eight units were affected by fire or water.


A total of 14 children and 15 adults were displaced, officials said. They were offered assistance from the American Red Cross.


The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, officials said. MFRD's Fire Marshal's Office was on scene to conduct a routine investigation and will likely return to the scene Wednesday.
