MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A young woman was found dead inside an apartment across the street from the Middle Tennessee State University campus.

Her body was found by a friend around 9 a.m. Friday inside the apartment on the 900 block of Brown Road.

The victim was identified as 22-year-old Heather Maples of Murfreesboro. She is originally from Mesquite, TX.

Police are investigating Maples’ death as a homicide. They said this does not appear to be a random act of violence.

Murfreesboro police spokesman Kyle Evans said the victim and suspect likely knew each other.

“We just know they weren’t total strangers,” Evans said. “This wasn’t just a random act of violence. We believe there was a type of relationship. To what extent, we are still investigating.”

Although she lived across the street from campus, MTSU confirmed Maples was not a student at the university.

“It’s very surreal right now. I can’t imagine anything like this happening to someone I knew so personally,” said Amanda Corey, Maples’ friend and neighbor.

“She had a really bubbly personality,” Corey added. “She was really fun. She liked to wear pink.”

Neighbors told Channel 4 they didn’t hear or see anything suspicious Thursday night. While Maples was found dead Friday morning, it’s unclear when the attack happened.

Some neighbors said Maples would sometimes go to a nearby bar. A bartender told Channel 4 he had seen her before, but not Thursday night.

Police have not released a description of the suspect. So far, no arrest has been made.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-893-STOP.
