Murfreesboro is such a special community, but at Christmas the warmth is even more wonderful. This feeling will be seen at 2:00 this afternoon when the Murfreesboro Christmas Parade travels down East Main Street, around the square, onto West Main and ends on Walnut Street.
Over the years, the WGNS Blanket Brigade has given out new blankets to local homeless persons on cold nights. We have already had more cold nights than in the past. Even the Farmer's Almanac predicts a colder than usual winter.
With that in mind, when you see WGNS in today's Christmas Parade, we will be collecting new blankets for the homeless. We can put them in the News Truck as the parade passes you.
This is going to be a great Murfreesboro Christmas Parade.
The Murfreesboro Christmas Parade starts at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon (Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014). This year's theme is "All I Want For Christmas Is___". And the weather is supposed to be partly cloudy with a high near 60.
This is WGNS' thirtieth year to coordinate the local Christmas parade.
The parade begins at the intersection of East Main Street and Middle Tennessee Boulevard, in front of MTSU President Sidney McPhee's home. It travels down East Main Street, around the historic square, down West Main and exits onto Walnut Street.
Angie Walker said, "We will have Riverdale, Oakland, Siegel, Blackman High School bands along with Middle Tennessee Tennessee Christian School's marching band.
The grand marshal(s) is the Blackman Blaze girls basketball team who were National Champions last season."
The check in procedure will be a little different this year. Entries will check in at the parking lot across Rutherford Boulevard from Alumni Drive. In that parking lot, entries will have the final assembly and then drive across the street to line up on Alumni Drive.
Walker noted, "We are hoping this will eliminate people from parking non-parade vehicles on Alumni Drive, which causes multiple problems."
The parade has many volunteers, Approximately 30 volunteers spend several months working on the mechanics of the event to make it run smoothly. When parade day arrives, the number of volunteers is well over a thousand.
"We are very grateful to MTSU for accommodating us and allowing us to use the campus", Walker commented. "They are always willing to help in any way they can and they do make the process less chaotic."
"The Murfreesboro Police Department is also an integral part of parade day, without their help closing roads, the parade wouldn't be possible."
She indicated that parade's sponsors provide us with volunteers and the many resources needed to manage such a huge undertaking as the Mufreesboro Christmas Parade. Our sponsors are Synergy Bank, Atmos Energy, WGNS Radio, Stones River Amateur Radio Club, and the Noon Exchange Club.
NOTE: If you are unable to bring new blankets to the parade today, the public is encouraged to bring them by any Wilson Bank & Trust branch in Murfreesboro this winter, or to WGNS at 306 South Church Street (next to the police department).
And as another Good Neighbor service, WGNS continues to take your worn American flags. Bring the by the radio station and they will be burned with dignity.
Your Good Neighbor Station (GNS) also takes in unneeded Bibles and gives them new homes. Over the years you seem to accumulate Bibles, and it just doesn't feel right to throw them away. Bring them by WGNS and we will see that they continue to help others.
